Bayport NY Yellow Pages

Bayport is a hamlet in the southern part of Islip. The hamlet is borders by the Great South Bay and only three miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Bayport was part of the William Nicoll Grant of 1697. No land was sold in the area until 1791 when a commission of the state sold parcels to pay off debts of Nicoll. At the time there were a few homes on the land but it was believed to be owned by squatters or possibly renters. The land was sold in long strips of one mile long by 500 feet wide. The homes were built in a row in the center of the farms, with some of these homes still standing today dating from 1800 to 1860. Bayport is in the Bayport - Blue Point School District which offers 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. The most popular attraction is Meadow Croft which has been restored to its original look in 1910. The homestead was owned by the Roosevelt family and was the summer home of John E. Roosevelt that was the 1st cousin of President Theodore Roosevelt.
